National Museum in Yangon - Preserving Heritage & Years Past

The National Museum in Yangon makes its home in a five-stored building situated on Pyay Road, within the Dagon Township of the city. Originally located in the Jubilee Hall of Yangon since its initiation in 1952, the museum was relocated to other locations until it made its resting place at its current location.

The museum is home to various artefacts such as memoirs from its history and countless artworks denoting the talent of the Burmese folk. Resting within the confines of the museums walls rests the magnificent Lion Throne, which originates from the times where the Mandalay Royal Palace was in its prime. The throne which survived the tyranny of World War II and came into the hands of the British which in turn placed it in a museum in Calcutta India in1902. The five floors of Yangon's National Museum hold many treasures. The ground floor is home to an extensive collection of religious text dating back from ancient Myanmarian times. Another spectacular attraction within the museum is the throne room, which is home to eight thrones of past Myanmar kings. The Royal Lion Throne that once belonged to King Thibaw also resides amongst the others in this gallery, in this intricate designs made out of 'Yamaney' timber lion carvings.

Another popular attraction of the National Museum in Yangon is the Yadanobon Period Exhibit Hall located within the ground floor of the structure. Housing various fashions and clothing items, including accessories, jewellery and furniture, they provided insight into the various ethnic groups and social classes that were present over the years. Other relics housed within the museum include royal belongings, prehistoric exhibits, natural exhibits, ornamented objects, murals from the Bagan period as well as Myanmar paintings and artworks.
